Volunteering
You can get involved in volunteering with STAR directly as we are always looking for new members. We can also put you in touch with other groups like the Red Cross and Positive Action in Housing, who work directly with Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Glasgow. There is always loads going on so there really is something for everybody!
The easiest way to get involved with us is to come along to our weekly meetings. They are every Tuesday at 6pm in the QMU, usually in committee room 3. If you can’t make this, email us on starglasgow@googlemail.com.
Volunteer With STAR
Most of what we do revolves around fundraising and campaigning. Last semester we raised well over £1000 and are hoping to raise even more this semester. We put on loads of events, from cake stalls to ceilidhs to sleep outs, and are always looking for new volunteers with good ideas. There is information on our current campaigns to the right. We are also hoping to do much more awareness raising this semester.
Volunteering opportunities with other groups in Glasgow:
Star work closely with lots of other groups and organisations, so almost everyone in STAR has direct experience volunteering as well as fundraising and campaigning on campus. The latest opportunity is with Unity, who have just opened a new charity shop and are looking for people to help staff it!
- Unity- Our friends at the Unity Centre are always looking for volunteers for their various projects. They offer:
- World Cafe (Tuesday 10-4pm) – Prepare, cook and serve free, healthy food to asylum seekers from the local community.
- Work in the charity shops or the “Nae Borders” bookshop.
- Help out with the Unity Women’s Project (Monday 10-5pm.)
- Come along and provide practical support and advice in the Unity Centre itself.
- Maryhill Integration Network – Music, theatre, writing and other projects for asylum seekers and refugees in Glasgow.
- Scottish Detainee Visitors – If you are interested in SDV there is the opportunity to be provided with training to visit and provide support to detained asylum seekers at Dungavel Detention Centre. The deadline for this is the 27th January 2012 so if you’re interested, get in touch asap. Their website is www.sdv.org.uk.
We’re also open to suggestions and ideas for new projects so if there is anything you want to do, let us know!
