“There is no place for racism and xenophobia in modern British politics. Nor is democratic debate advanced by the denigration of the most vulnerable in our country, including children and asylum seekers who do not enjoy the right to participate in elections. “

Asylum and immigration has been a hot topic in the run up to the general election, with some parties and sections of the media choosing to blame migrants for everything from congestion to overcrowding in hospitals.  Star Glasgow believes that even in tough economic circumstances, scapegoating those seeking asylum is not the answer.  The Asylum Election Pledge, which asks candidates to take our responsibility to protect those with a well founded fear of persecution seriously, is a step in the right direction.  You can check here whether or not the candidates in your constituency have signed the pledge, and if not, there’s still time to ask them to!
