Background
The scale of the refugee crisis in response to continued violence in Syria since March 2011 is huge. As of the 9th of November 2012, more than 408,000 people are estimated to have fled from the violence in Syria to the neighbouring countries of Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq, putting an increasing strain on the governments and host communities.
The UNHCR aim to support the Syrian refugees by providing emergency packages containing non-food humanitarian supplies ranging from blankets and clothing to cooking kits and jerry cans and these are aimed at helping families meet basic needs during the coming winter. These family aid packages have already been supplied to 59,000 families, or about 295,000 people but the UNHCR and other UN agencies are now reporting that “lack of funding is limiting their ability to respond to the growing needs” of the crisis.
