Tonight was STAR Glasgow’s first official meeting of the 2013/14 academic year and to get the year started we invited Jasmine, a volunteer caseworker with Unity to give a brief overview of the whole asylum system including it’s pitfalls and traps – with some really shocking stories that she has seen from her time as a volunteer.  Discussing something so large (and ever-changing) is no mean feat, but Jasmine did a great job!

Following this we heard more from Jasmine, along with members of the Justice for Somalian Bajuni campaign about the importance of their campaign and how it came about that the home office is trying to deport them to Kenya.

After these talks we invited everyone to stay for a quite social in our meeting room with juice , crisps and biscuits!  It was a really nice opportunity for returning members to say hello to people they hadn’t seen over summer and gave new members the chance to ask any questions they had about the asylum system, STAR or volunteering, and get to know every a little better!ImageThis was taken during the social, after the meeting.
