Sleep Out 18/11/11

Near the end of November, STAR organised a sleepout, where we slept out all night on the steps of the Wellington Church. This was to raise awareness of asylum seekers who are made destitute by the UKBA as an incentive to go back to the country they have fled from.

We also raised money for Unity’s night shelter and Cafe. Their night shelter provides a safe space for Asylum seekers to be overnight, as they are legally not allowed to use homeless shelters. The cafe is run as a soup kitchen, giving meals to asylum seekers who are living destitute. We raised around £700 through being sponsored to sleep out, and by shaking buckets at people on the night.

There was a lot of fun to be had that night, from singing and dancing to music
played by those who brought guitars to watching a short play written and performed just for us by Zoe Michel. The fun eventually died down around 4am, when people started getting tired and getting into their sleeping bags for the rest of the night.

It was a marvellous event, and we raised enough money to get the Night Shelter going as well as having a great evening. If you want to donate to the cause, here’s where you do it: http://www.justgiving.com/starglasgowsleepout

We’re planning to hold another sleepout in February sometime, and this one’s going to be bigger and better than the last! See you there 🙂
