Hello everyone!

With freshers week now drawing to a close I hope that you’re not too tired out or inundated with the deadly freshers flu to get start getting excited about the next few weeks ahead because there’s lots going on!
Our official plan for Semeter 1 is now online!  We’re still waiting on some confirmations though, so it is subject to change!

IMPORTANT – there has been a mix up with room bookings at the QMU and as such for the first meeting we’ll be in COMMITTEE ROOM 1 but for all meetings after this we will be in the TV ROOM.
 
STAR NEWS
*Our first meeting is Wed 25th of September at 5pm in COMMITTEE ROOM 1 The topic is “An Introduction to the Asylum system”.  It will be presented by both Jasmine Sallis, a caseworker at the Unity Centre and members of the Justice for Somalian Bajuni’s Campaign (http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/justice-for-somalian-bajunis-in-glasgow).  
The meeting will take around an hour and a half, and after this we will head to the food factory or the Hub for a chance to get to know each other and to eat some food – if you’d like too please bring some food along to share!
*Thanks to everyone who helped out or stopped by the stall for a chat over Tuesday and Wednesday we manged to sign up 82 new people to our mailing list and gave out hundreds over flyers debunking common misconceptions about asylum seekers and refugees!  (Read about it here on our blog – https://starglasgow.wordpress.com/2013/09/19/freshers-fair/)
*Mazloom play – we received an email letting us know that the Mazloom tickets are selling out quickly!  If you’re interested in coming along please drop us an email and we’ll try and make a block booking 🙂
*STAR are joining with GU Amnesty to host a film screening of “A sacrifice” after our volunteering fair on the 2nd of October.   (Trigger warning – the film contains scenes of graphic self immolation and burns injuries) “A sacrifice” is a documentary highlighting the widespread and current human rights abuses being committed in Tibet through the eyes of a returning Tibetan refugee with a focus on the Tibetan act of protest – self immolation. .  The facebook event is here – (https://www.facebook.com/events/597440403650551/) and information about the film is here – http://asacrificefilm.com/

*Tomorrow night (21/09/13) –  TYCI is a feminist charity club night, open to all genders and this month they are raising for the Unity Womens Project – who provide personal and practical support to asylum seeking women in Glasgow –

CAMPAIGNS NEWS
*Trigger Warning – sexual abuse  
Several detainees from Yarlswood Immigration Centre have come forward to report sexual abuse from SERCO staff working there – (http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2013/sep/14/detainees-yarls-wood-sexual-abuse)
There is currently a petition calling for a public inquiry – please sign it! (http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/public-inquiry-into-yarls-wood-irc.html)
*Moses Belongs to Glasgow – 
After being scheduled to be deported to Nigeria at 9pm 19/09/13 Moses was removed from the flight for causing a disruption.  He’s now back in Colunbrook detention centre near Heathrow and campaigners are now trying to have him moved back to Dungavel detention centre in Scotland so that he can be closer to his family.  For information on how you can help with this visit the campaign’s facebook group – ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/196681707179230/ )
 
VOLUNTEERING
*STAR’s very own volunteering fair is in two weeks time – 02/10/13 – come along to find out about volunteering opportunities in Glasgow and talk directly to the groups and charities yourself!
